Frequently asked questions
Where are my letters stored?
On your iPhone. If iCloud Backup is on, they are included in your iPhone’s backup. With Standard or Plus you can also turn on Cloud backup & sync (Settings), which keeps an encrypted copy on our servers in Hong Kong and syncs your letters to your other devices; turning it off deletes that copy. See the privacy policy for details.
Does anyone read my letters?
No person does. To read a letter, its photos are processed by Google’s Gemini AI. Our server passes them on and doesn’t keep them, and Google doesn’t use them to train its models. If you connect an AI assistant (Plus), that assistant reads your backed-up letters when you ask it to.
The AI got something wrong. How do I fix it?
Open the letter, tap the ⋮ menu and choose Edit to correct the date, sender, receiver, category, summary or the text of any page. You can also tap Re-read next to a page to have it read again, or restore the original AI version at any time.
How do I connect Claude, ChatGPT or Grok?
You need Plus with cloud backup turned on. In the app, open Settings → AI assistants and copy the address shown there. In your assistant, add a custom connector (MCP server) with that address. The assistant opens a sign-in page with a code: enter the code in the same screen in Mailtrove. The assistant can then search and read your letters, but never change or delete them. You can disconnect it at any time.
How do I delete my account?
Settings → Cloud backup & sync → Delete account. This deletes your account, the cloud copy of your letters and your AI assistant connections. Letters on your iPhone stay. Subscriptions are billed by Apple: cancel them in your App Store account settings.
A letter is stuck on “Scanning”.
Mailtrove reads one page at a time and needs an internet connection. If the connection drops or the app is closed, it continues from the last page it finished the next time you open the app.
How do I get my data out?
Settings → Export all letters creates a ZIP file with every photo and all text that you can save to Files, iCloud Drive or your computer.
I deleted a letter by mistake.
Deleted letters stay in Settings → Recently deleted for 30 days, where you can restore them.
How do I change the language?
Mailtrove follows your iPhone’s language. To choose a different one, go to Settings → Language. Summaries of newly read letters are written in the language you choose.
What devices are supported?
iPhone and iPad running iOS 16.4 or later.
